Here are 20 tips to minimise the stress whilst moving.

1. Pack an overnight bag with all your essentials.

There is nothing worse than finishing the unloading in the evening because it now means you’ve got to unpack and find the stuff you need for the night and morning. Best thing to do is pack the things you will need immediately so no matter how tired you are, you can wake up fresh and ready for unpacking. It would also be a good idea to carry your gadgets etc. in your overnight bag so they can't get lost in the move.

2. Pack the items you will need to unload first in a clear plastic box.

The box should contain things like eating utensils and cookware so you can eat without having to pack anything. Things like bin bags and the tools for unpacking such as scissors etc.

3. Wrap breakables in clothing or towels.

The free solution to making sure your breakables don’t get broken. Not only are you saving money not buying bubble wrap but you are packing your clothes and your breakables at the same time. Also for extra padding pack your glasses and small breakables in clean socks.

4. Labelling which box goes in which room.

Most people just label what is in the box. If you label where the box needs to go then you can unpack each room as you go. But don’t forget to label the sides of the boxes not the top as you won’t be able to see the top when boxes are stacked.

5. Pre-Clean bathroom

If you can go into the property before you move in, clean and put the basics in the bathroom such as shower curtain, towels and toilet roll so you don’t have to unpack boxes just to have a shower. At least the bathroom will be ready for use.

6. Vertical Plates.

If you pack plates vertically like vinyl records then they will be less likely to break.

7. Keep drawers as they are.

Good thing about drawers is that they are like their own moving boxes because everything is already in there. Even if you just cover the top and stack them up ready to go it will save you having to pack and repack each drawer.

8. Sandwich bags for the small bits and bobs.

Sandwich bags are great for the screws and bits for any furniture that needs to be disassembled. All you have to do is just tie the bag up and tape it to whatever it belongs to. That way you don’t have a whole pile of screws and bolts for all your furniture. You can also do this with wires for electronics.

9. Take a picture.

There is nothing worse than not knowing how your wires go on your electronics. If you take a picture of it and put the wires in a bag per device then you can’t go wrong.

10. Make the most of baskets and suitcases.

Anything that can carry things is perfect to use as storage. Why load an empty suitcase when you can pack some of your clothes or heavy things in there.

11. Keep your clothes as they are.

All you have to do is grab a handful of your hanging clothes and from the bottom put them into a bin bag. That way they keep upright and the hangers are still on.

12. Vacuum Pack

Anything that will be going straight into storage such as seasonal clothing or bedding can be vacuum packed. This will then save you room when your loading up and when you get into your new place.

13. Help the help.

If your friends are coming to help you load and move, make sure you have everything packed before they turn up. There is nothing worse than waiting round for you to pack.

14. Number your boxes.

It wouldn’t hurt to number the boxes and make a list of what is in each box. This will make it easier to make sure you didn’t forget anything. It would also let you know that if a box did get lost or stolen, you would know what is in it. Also if it’s just numbered and you are the only one knows what’s in it then you won’t be broadcasting which box has your valuables in.

15. Photos of old home and new home.

If you are renting, make sure that you take pictures of your cleaned out home when you move out and when you move in to your new home. This will save you major headaches when it comes to landlords that try and charge you cleaning charges when they don’t have to. Also it’s handy to take a picture of your new place so you know how to leave it if you have to move out.

16. Change of address.

Don’t forget to change your address 2 weeks prior to moving. This is so that any post coming will go to your new address but you are still around to grab your old post. Write a list of everything you need to change and tick them off as you go along.

17. If you need to sell items.

If there are things that you don’t want to take with you but are too valuable to just give away, then start selling on ebay at least 6 weeks before moving. At least you wouldn’t have to worry about taking them with you on the move which then means more room.

18. Do your last food shop two weeks before moving.

The more food you use up before you move the less you will have to throw out or take with you.

19. Ask someone to babysit.

If you can, ask someone to baby sit and look after any pets so you don’t have to worry about where they are and keeping them entertained.

20. Defrosting

Don’t forget to defrost your fridge/freezer at least a day before moving and wipe up any mess. This is so you won’t have a stinky wet mess when you get to your new home.
